A Warm Heart…

Encounter what a Y-Malawi trip is all about…

The way this works…

It is pretty amazing the way that God has exploded the work of Y-Malawi. He has blessed the efforts of Y-Malawi tremendously and it has allowed for a lot of people to be touched, impacted, and mobilized to the “Warm Heart of Africa”. In has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for compassion and proclamation work to the impoverished people in these Nkhoma and Chilenje villages. It has resulted in close to 600 people getting on a plane for Africa, 40 churches plugging into the project, and approximately 7000 children being sponsored in the communities that are seeing transformational change happen before their eyes. All this happened with only one paid employee–a financial administrator. Yep…

You see, Y-Malawi may have it’s 501c-3 (Registered “Y-Africa”), but it functions more as a movement than a non-profit. The best tool to have when explaining what Y-Malawi is is a mirror…because Y-Malawi is you. Y-Malawi is a unified movement of churches committed to  seeing sustainable, positive transformation in the name of Jesus Christ in the regions of the Nkhoma and Chilenje valleys in central Malawi. Besides our financial administrator, every single person involved with Y-Malawi is a volunteer. Every trip leader, every videographer, every church champion…and that is why it is so incredibly amazing to see what God has done and we believe, in Faith, that He will continue to do. This is the Body–comprised of all sorts of people with different talents–moving together for the benefit of those in need and unto the Glory of God. It’s awesome!

We tell you this because we believe many don’t know this about Y-Malawi and we think it’s important that people do. Individuals, just like you, make all this work. If you have been impacted by Y-Malawi and feel led to help out in some way, even if it’s just a half hour a week, we would be excited to help you find a place that suits your skills and passions. Just shoot an email to jordan@faithquestmissions.org letting us know your interested. You can consider the chart below for insight into a few places that you may want to help out with. Blessings!

Take the Plunge for Clean Water in Malawi!

1.4 million : number of children dying each year from lack of clean water

400,000 : number of children dying each year from diarrhea linked to contaminated water

1,800 : number of children under five dying EACH DAY from Malaria (disease carrying mosquitos are breeding near these unprotected water sources)

If these numbers bother you, you’re not alone…so what can you do about it?!

For the 4th year in a row, on this upcoming New Year’s Day you will find a group of fun-loving people on a mission: to provide clean drinking water to communities in Malawi, Africa.  How are they choosing to do this?  By jumping into the arctic-like Pacific Ocean in the annual Polar Bear Plunge! (don’t worry, if this isn’t for you…you can just support the people crazy enough to do it!)

Bret Daniels has led the charge over the past few years to raise money for those in desperate need of drinkable water to avoid water-borne diseases that are so prevalent in Malawi, and around the world.  In the past three years, supporters have given a total of over $16,000 for this wonderful cause and we’re hoping to see this number increased in a BIG way.  In 2010, Bret’s seemingly far-fetched goal of $6,500 was shattered, so we know that his goal of $7,000 this year can easily be accomplished!

In a video we recently posted (here), we see that a staggering $450 Billion is spent on Christmas every year, while $10 Billion could provide clean water for the entire world.  After seeing this a few years ago, Bret decided to take action…and we hope you will as well.  While we greatly appreciate any amount, we are encouraging gifts in increments of $40.  Why?  Because this is the estimated cost to save a child’s life through clean water.  Want to save several lives this Christmas?  Just multiply that number by $40!

Do something really meaningful and memorable this Christmas by providing life-saving water to those in need.  And if you’re feeling brave, come join us in jumping into the ocean on New Year’s Day!  See you at the Plunge! (click here for more details and the simple, quick way to give)

Transforming Malawi in 2012!

Merry Christmas! We are so thankful for all the Lord has allowed us to accomplish over the past year, and now we want to take the time to share how you can take part in saving hundreds of thousands of lives, physically and spiritually through our goals for the new year. Read on!

First things first, let’s END MALARIA!
We have exciting plans in progress to completely eradicate malaria in our two project areas. What once seemed like just a far-fetched ambition, can actually become reality with your help and support!

  • Over 1,800 children under 5 are dying every day from this deadly infection.
  • It is the number one killer and debilitating health problem in the Nkhoma/Chilenje Valleys where Y-Malawi is focused.

Witchcraft is the #1 non-health-related issue in Malawi!
We are committed to pressing back and wiping out this enemy plot and protecting the people, especially vulnerable children, with the love and knowledge of Jesus through increasing discipleship and prayer. Through Y-Malawi’s support of partners on the ground this year alone:

  • 34,000 men, women and children in Malawi gave their lives to Christ.
  • 2,000 chiefs and their wives are attending weekly Bible studies in Nkhoma/Chilenje, who are then impacting and leading their entire villages.
  • 7,941 people received personal counseling from our partners during Jesus Film follow-up visits.

We can’t do it without your help!
The goals we want to accomplish this year are bigger and more audacious than ever. Our ministry depends on support but honestly, we haven’t done a great job of conveying our needs to you, our faithful financial supporters. Your investment in lives is desperately needed and we’d like to make this our biggest Christmas gift ever!

Would you please consider a tax-deductible gift to Y-Malawi of $50, $100 or whatever you feel led to give this Christmas to see lives and souls of the Malawian people saved! These gifts will meet the shortfall needs in our ministry, and will continue to keep our partners moving forward without hindrance.

You can give by:

  • Simply clicking on the Giving Catalog to the right and place your gift amount into the “Most Pressing Needs” box to donate by major credit card.

God bless you and your family in this Christmas season and in the upcoming year!

Together for the people of Malawi,

John Gash
Director

“So two good things happen as a result of your gifts–those in need are helped, and they overflow with thanks to God.” 2 Cor 9:12 (TLB)

Time Spent with Coast Hills Pt. 2

Katelyn, a nurse from the United States describes some work she did with the Coast Hills team, along with Y-Malawi ministry partners:

“Here, it is a cultural practice to burn the remains of your crops at the end of every season.  They set fire to just about everything, and when they burn their crops it creates problems in the soil by diminishing a lot of the nutrients that could be maintained from the previous season’s crops. One of Y-Malawi’s partner ministries is a farming ministry called Farming God’s Way where Malawian farmers are taught better and more efficient methods.  We provide pesticide and teach people how to properly use it to keep vermin away from their maize.

Other things we’ve done is play with kids at Kids Club, do children’s ministry, and help out with Bible studies.  We’ve also gone with World Vision and visited some schools in the villages.  The Y-Malawi group also works with a group of Malawian ministry partners called Fishers Trainers and Senders (FTS).  We’ve been able to share the gospel with groups of people in many different rural villages which has been a really amazing experience.  Hearing the stories of faith of a lot of the Malawians just awes me.  They have been through so much yet still have such unwavering faith in Christ!”

Time Spent with Coast Hills in Malawi Pt. 1

Once again, we wanted to share some of the correspondence we had with Katelyn, a nurse from the United States who chose to give her time to spending two months at the hospital in Nkhoma.  This post is from her time spent with the Y-Malawi team that came from Coast Hills Community Church, and the work with partners they all got to do while they were there.

“While the Coast Hills team was here, I mostly spent my time outside of the hospital, traveling into the more rural villages and working closely with Y-Malawi ministry partners.  They have greatly helped me in becoming accustomed to the Malawian culture.  I’ve even started learning Chichewa!  Chichewa is the local language…although I’m pretty bad at it.

The villages themselves are an experience.  The poverty is just astonishing.  Any child who has shoes is considered to be very well off.  I would estimate that 95% of the village kids do not have shoes, with only one or two pairs of clothes.  Y-Malawi, in partnership with World Vision has been working to help the towns of Nkhoma and Chilenje with several different partner ministries on the ground here in these Area Development Projects.”

“Infected”

A Warm Heart is a contagious infection.

I’ve been to a place where it runs rampant.

Though attempts have been made to stifle the outbreak,

It’s apparent in every village encampment.

When caught, the symptoms are quite evident,

Changed perspective, altered thought, priority confusion.

I think back to the time when my life was ideal,

But now it’s messed up and my ideal an illusion.

Though come to think of it, I feel vitalized.

Perhaps these people aren’t sick, but have been cured,

Of a disease that spreads the westernized realm.

A plague that so long I had mindlessly endured.

Nevertheless it remains contagious,

But from compassion you want it to spread.

Your friends, your family and mostly the Church,

Because it exhibits the Wine and the Bread.

So you remember your trip with great affection.

Changed perspective, altered thought, priority confusion.

I caught a major bug that took over my body.

And God woke me up from a life of delusion.

Give as Jesus Gave, Worship Fully

The Advent Conspiracy video, made in 2009, was powerful then and is just as powerful now. Please watch and continue reading below!

We have grown accustomed to feelings of concern and frustration due to the current state of our economy, and in no way do we want to minimalize those feelings because our nation is definitely struggling. However, despite our down economy the projected spending on Christmas this year is $500 billion! That’s up from the numbers in this video!
The needs are great all around the world. Living in such a privileged country, it is easy to forget the way of life for the majority of people living on earth, in just about every continent. Lack of clean water means the difference between life and death for men, women and children alike. There are millions of people going hungry today and every day. So many do not have the basic necessity of a roof over their head. We want to challenge the way you choose to spend and give this holiday season. Give relationally. Give love. Give life. To your friends and family, and to our brothers and sisters around the world who are in great need. Will you accept the challenge?

Fuel Shortages: An Unimaginable Inconvenience

Katelyn is a nurse from the United States who decided to work with Y-Malawi by going to Nkhoma hospital for two months to offer her knowledge and services to the nurses working there.  She sent us a few emails while she was there and we’d love to share what she was doing there and the insight she gives into Malawi.  Stay tuned for more stories from Katelyn!

“I am living in a small town called Nkhoma.  The guest house I am staying in (pictured, left) is very comfortable.  In the last year, they have added electricity and hot water so I usually have those amenities.  However, power outages are constant here so electricity is not always reliable.  Major power outages happen at least every other day (sometimes multiple times per day) and can last for hours.  A few places have back up generators but right now there is a huge fuel shortage in Malawi so people are largely unable to get fuel to run their back up generators.  The fuel crisis is so bad that lines at the gas station are literally a mile long.  A few hours is a short wait.  Often times people leave one family member with the car and it takes several days (yes several days!) of waiting in line until you get to the front.  Then there is always the concern that the gas station will run out before you get there after waiting in line.  There are no gas stations in Nkhoma where I am staying so hardly anyone has a back up generator.  Even the hospital where I am working has regular power outages (today there has been 4) that either last for minutes or hours.  So all rooms have candles in them and it is a good idea to carry a flashlight.”

After a power outage that lasted several hours  here in the Southern California area a few months ago, it is hard to imagine living with it day in and day out.  Join us in praying for the people in Malawi who are in need of fuel- especially in places like hospitals where fuel for generators to run machines and keep lights on when necessary, can save people’s lives!
