Supporting Indigenous Doctors in Malawi!

Through a partnership with Nkhoma Hospital in Malawi, Y-Malawi has been working to support the Indigenous Doctor Program, which aims to hire and retain native Malawian doctors serving at this rural hospital, in an extremely impoverished area.

With only about 20 new Malawian doctors graduating from universities each year, there are very few indigenous doctors to recruit, and even fewer that are willing to work in unfavorable conditions. We are currently trying to raise funds for the retention of two doctors who have been brought on and are working very diligently at Nkhoma Hospital. Check out some photos from Nkhoma Hospital and read more here to see how you and your church can get involved!

Y-Malawi In Their Own Words – Steve Haas

World Vision Vice President Steve Haas does a great job of relating the story of the first trip to Malawi. This is where it all started for Y-Malawi!

First Female President in Southern Africa!

We invite you, brothers and sisters, in joining us in praying for Malawi. In the midst of political unrest and a struggling economy, President Bingu wa Mutharika died of a heart attack this past Thursday. Vice President Joyce Banda was sworn into the position of President on Saturday. She is the second woman to fill a head of state position in the history of modern Africa and first in Southern Africa.

Although the constitution grants her this right, her entry into this position was not without attempts to deny her the presidency. Although she was elected with Mutharika, she was expelled from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party by Mutharika. In response, she formed her own People’s Party. Because of these reason, Mutharika’s presidential cabinet tried to restrict her from assuming office. She faces the challenge of leading a country whose parliament is dominated by Mutharika’s party, at the head of a cabinet that includes ministers vocally opposed to her.

Despite her opposition and challenges, she remains humble and hopeful.

“I want all of us to move into the future with hope and with that spirit of one-ness and unity. I just sincerely hope that there is no room for revenge. I just sincerely hope that we shall stand united…” -Banda, via starafrica.com

Banda is a strong advocate of democracy, women’s rights, and the Church. She is supported by our key partners within Y-Malawi. Though, being that we are not personally familiar with all the state of affairs, our best response is to pray for God’s will and care for Malawi.

Malawi Will Change You

We recently sat down with Dana, a young woman who traveled with us to Malawi last summer, and was forever changed because of it. At just 20 years old, she has witnessed the hardships that are faced around the world, but in particular, Malawi. She has also experienced true and pure joy by forming relationships with the people of Malawi. These things have shaped who she is and who she is becoming and we’re so excited to have her as one of our youth trip leaders this summer.

Why are you going back to Malawi?

I came to realize, on the last trip, that missions trips don’t always have to be about the number of houses you can build or how many Bibles you can hand out. Those things are great, and are a huge blessing, but for me the most important aspect of missions trips is the relationships you begin to form. The people there are beyond grateful that you made the journey across the world to spend time and pray with them, that you are there, being the hands and feet of Christ and sharing God’s love. I’m going back to share love and experience a kind of love that I never had before.

How has your life been different since going to Malawi?

The biggest thing for me was starting to realize how the problems I thought were a big deal, paled in comparison to the people I met who were dealing with loss of family members, fear of Malaria and the issue of witchcraft that is so prominent in the area. This isn’t to say our concerns aren’t important or that God only cares about the big issues in life, but it started to put things in perspective and allowed me to trust in God more because he is always in control. Secondly, it has made me more conscious of the excess we have here. I’m so thankful for the things I have, but I don’t need ‘things’ to make me happy. It’s about relationships and that’s something that’s so evident in a country where the people literally have nothing.

Finally, why is it important for you to lead this youth trip? Why do you want to see young people travel to Malawi?

On the trip I went on, we had a number of young people but also a large range of ages, from 15 to over 50.  It was a great experience, but the adults who were there maintained their parental roles as usual. However, when asked, the young people did step up. I want to see a whole group of young adults given the opportunity to be pushed as leaders in every area while on this trip. We are the future trip leaders, worship pastors, youth leaders, etc. and we need to start taking ownership and learning how to be leaders. It is also a great opportunity to experience things now, while still at a young age that will literally change the way you look at the world for the rest of your life.

Will Starve for Food…

Ryan Romberg is the Jr. High Pastor at Y-Malawi partner church, San Clemente Presbyterian Church. He has a strong passion to make sure that his students are being exposed to the needs of those around the world. That is why he is such a fervent advocate for the 30 Hour Famine. 30 Hour Famine is a World Vision sponsored youth event where students go without food for 30 hours in an attempt to raise money for those that are fighting hunger on a daily basis around the world. Ryan has hosted this event several times and truly believes it has the power to impact students and resonate throughout their lives.  In this video, hear from students who will be participating in the famine and from Ryan about what they are seeking to accomplish! If you would like to support Ryan and his students in the Famine, contact him at Ryan(at)scpres(dot)org.

Y-Malawi Family Reunion

At the beginning of the year, we hosted a Y-Malawi Family Reunion. This was a chance to bring together anyone who has been on a trip with us over the past 7 years, anyone who has supported the mission of Y-Malawi, or anyone looking to hear more about the vision for the years to come. We had an incredible turn-out and amazing support from people willing to sacrifice time and distance to be with us for this special night.
Steve Haas, Vice President and Chief Catalyst of World Vision, graciously came and spoke about many people banding together as one to accomplish a common goal, in our case, transforming entire areas of Malawi. John Gash, President of FaithQuest Missions and Y-Malawi spoke about our vision in the year to come (learn more about that here). We had a look back at what has been accomplished over the years (watch here), and enjoyed Chick-Fil-A, activities, raffles, a photo booth, and lots of laughs courtesy of Comedian, Adam Christing. We’re humbled and so thankful for everyone who helped out, and can’t wait to do it again! Check out a short photo recap.

The Young and the Restless…

Camden’s Well from Hanju Lee on Vimeo.

Camden Rhee is 12 years old. After an experience during Lent 2 years ago, in which he gave up all beverages outside of milk and water, he found a deep conviction for those in the world that had no access to clean water. After researching it more, he felt a burning desire to take action and do something. At 12, he’s living out the Gospel in a real way. This is his story…What’s holding you back?

Because of Y-Malawi in the Last 7 Years

For the past 7 years, Y-Malawi has been committed to seeing spiritual and tangible change come to the Malawian communities of Nkhoma and Chilenje.  This has only been possible through partnerships with churches across America, as well as partners on the ground in Malawi.  At the beginning of 2012, we decided it was time to celebrate!  Celebrate lives changed, souls saved for eternity, and hearts forever impacted, both in Malawi and here in the U.S.

Dear friend and diligent supporter of Y-Malawi, Sandy Sizemore, created this touching video to recap all that has been accomplished over the years. First shown at our Reunion Celebration in January to bring back memories for all those who had been on a trip to the Warm Heart of Africa, we now want to share it with whoever will take a minute to watch, because God is truly moving and we need all the support we can get to continue the work He has called us all to; to “Go and make disciples of all nations.”  Enjoy!

A Warm Heart…

Encounter what a Y-Malawi trip is all about…

The way this works…

It is pretty amazing the way that God has exploded the work of Y-Malawi. He has blessed the efforts of Y-Malawi tremendously and it has allowed for a lot of people to be touched, impacted, and mobilized to the “Warm Heart of Africa”. In has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars for compassion and proclamation work to the impoverished people in these Nkhoma and Chilenje villages. It has resulted in close to 600 people getting on a plane for Africa, 40 churches plugging into the project, and approximately 7000 children being sponsored in the communities that are seeing transformational change happen before their eyes. All this happened with only one paid employee–a financial administrator. Yep…

You see, Y-Malawi may have it’s 501c-3 (Registered “Y-Africa”), but it functions more as a movement than a non-profit. The best tool to have when explaining what Y-Malawi is is a mirror…because Y-Malawi is you. Y-Malawi is a unified movement of churches committed to  seeing sustainable, positive transformation in the name of Jesus Christ in the regions of the Nkhoma and Chilenje valleys in central Malawi. Besides our financial administrator, every single person involved with Y-Malawi is a volunteer. Every trip leader, every videographer, every church champion…and that is why it is so incredibly amazing to see what God has done and we believe, in Faith, that He will continue to do. This is the Body–comprised of all sorts of people with different talents–moving together for the benefit of those in need and unto the Glory of God. It’s awesome!

We tell you this because we believe many don’t know this about Y-Malawi and we think it’s important that people do. Individuals, just like you, make all this work. If you have been impacted by Y-Malawi and feel led to help out in some way, even if it’s just a half hour a week, we would be excited to help you find a place that suits your skills and passions. Just shoot an email to jordan@faithquestmissions.org letting us know your interested. You can consider the chart below for insight into a few places that you may want to help out with. Blessings!
